Boxing machine in use in a busy venue

The questions every venue asks

What is a boxing machine?

A boxing machine is a coin or card operated arcade machine that measures how hard you punch. You pay, a padded bag or ball drops down, you hit it once, and a display gives you a score to beat. They are also called punch machines, boxer machines, punchbag machines or arcade strength testers, and they are the same thing. The machine pays out no money and no prizes, which is what makes it an amusement machine rather than a gaming machine in UK law. It runs on a normal 13A socket and needs a corner with room to swing and a few feet for people to stand and watch, because the watching is most of the point: one person plays and a group forms.

Who owns the machine?

We do, on profit share. You never buy it and you never rent it, so it is not an asset on your books, it is not your insurance problem, and a fault is ours to fix rather than yours to pay for. If you buy one outright instead it is yours, and you keep everything it takes.

What is a fair split on a boxing machine?

There is no published standard, and anyone who quotes you one as if it were settled is guessing. Ours is 50/50 and we put it on every page. What decides whether a deal is good matters more than the number: who owns the machine, who pays for parts and callouts, whether the takings are counted or estimated, how often you are paid, and what happens when you want it gone. A larger share of a machine whose takings you cannot check, on terms you cannot leave, is worth less than a smaller share of one you can.

Is this a revenue share or a profit share?

Same thing, different name. Boxing machine profit share, arcade machine profit share, revenue share, income share, commission, a rental agreement. Different operators use different words for broadly the same arrangement, and the word tells you nothing useful on its own. What matters is the number and who carries the cost. Ours is 50/50 of everything the machine takes, with nothing upfront, no rental fee and no minimum spend, and the venue’s half paid monthly by bank transfer. If an operator is vague about which of those applies to you, ask them to put it in writing before anything is installed.

Is a punch machine the same as a boxing machine?

Yes. Boxing machine, punch machine, punching machine, punch bag machine, punchbag machine, boxer machine, boxing simulator, punch power machine, strength tester. They are all the same thing, and which name people use mostly depends on where in the country they are. It is a cabinet with a bag hanging off it that scores how hard you hit it and puts the number up on a display. If you have seen one in a pub, that is what you are looking at. Older ones were coin-operated only; ours take cash and card.

What does it cost me?

Nothing to install. Nothing to rent. We supply the machine, deliver it, install it and service it, and we split what it takes 50/50. If it takes nothing, you pay nothing, because we only earn when the machine earns.

Am I tied in?

Everything is in writing before anything is installed: the split, the term, and what happens if you want the machine gone. Nothing hidden, nothing sprung on you later. And if it is not earning, tell us: we would rather move it or take it back than leave a dead machine in your corner, because we only make money when it makes money.

Do I need a licence for it?

No gaming machine permit. A boxing machine pays out no money and no prizes, so it is an amusement machine rather than a gaming machine and it does not fall under gambling licensing. If your premises licence carries conditions about machines, send it over and we will go through it with you before anything is installed.

Does it take card payments?

Both. Every machine we place takes cash and card, with a contactless reader fitted as standard rather than sold as an extra. That matters more than people expect: a coin-only machine misses everyone who has nothing in their pocket, and a card-only machine misses the person who would rather drop a coin in. Taking both means you are not turning anyone away. The card side is also logged automatically, so those takings are recorded rather than estimated.

Does it need anything besides a plug?

A standard 13A socket and room to swing, and that is it. There is no supply to put in and nothing for an electrician to do. The one thing we check on the day is that the card reader has a signal where the machine is going, because a spot with no reception is the one place it will not work properly. Send us a photo and we will look at that before anyone turns up. We are not going to guess at your electricity bill either. It is a plug-in machine, not a piece of plant.

Can I move it once it is in?

Yes. Tell us and we will move it, and it costs you nothing. Placement decides what a machine takes more than anything else, so if the first spot is not working we would rather shift it than watch it sit there. If the room is wrong altogether we take it away.

Who empties the machine and counts the cash?

We do. We collect, count it and show you the figures, and your half goes out monthly by bank transfer. The card side is logged automatically, so there is a record behind the number instead of a bucket of change and a conversation. You are not handling money for us or keeping a tally.

What happens if it gets damaged?

Wear and tear is ours, all of it. Parts, labour and callouts come out of our side, not yours, and if a machine keeps failing we replace it rather than patch it again. Anything that goes because the machine has been used is our problem to solve, and a machine that gets punched every weekend is a machine that gets used. Deliberate damage is the one thing that sits on your side, the same as it would for your pool table or your furniture. These are built to take a full-force punch from anybody who fancies their chances, so it is rare, and it has not been a problem at any site we run. If it ever did happen we would talk it through with you rather than point at a clause.

How and when do I get paid?

Monthly, by bank transfer, with the figures behind it. You are not waiting on a cash drop or taking a number on trust.

Is it safe and properly looked after?

Every machine is installed by us, not dropped off, and serviced on a schedule. Faults are ours to fix, not yours. If your insurer or licensing officer wants specific paperwork for their file, ask us and we will tell you exactly what we can provide. A straight answer rather than a badge.

How much space does it need?

About the footprint of a fruit machine plus clear room to swing, and a standard 13A socket. A dead corner, the wall by the bar, the space next to the pool table. Send us a photo of the spot and we will tell you whether it works before anyone visits.

What kind of venues does it suit?

Anywhere with footfall and floor space earning nothing, and it is a wider list than people expect. We already run machines in pubs and bars, a students’ union, padel centres, a shisha lounge, restaurants and takeaways, gyms, a barber shop, vape shops, a football club and an air base, plus outdoor events and weddings. If people stand around in your place, it works.

Do you cover my area?

We operate nationwide from a North West base. Send us your postcode and we will tell you straight away instead of making you wait for a callback. See areas we cover.

Can I hire or rent one for a single event?

Yes. Boxing machine hire and rental for weddings, festivals, corporate days and fresher's week. Fixed price agreed upfront, delivered and collected by us. See hire.

Can I get a pool table or foosball on profit share instead?

Yes. The arrangement is identical whatever the machine: nothing upfront, no rental fee, takings split 50/50 and paid monthly. We run a pool table at Padel Bonito in Sheffield on exactly those terms. Boxing machines, pool, foosball, sub-soccer, air hockey, basketball arcades and darts are all available this way. Tell us about the room and we will say what suits it.

Can I just buy one outright?

Yes, and we can supply other arcade machines too. Custom branding is available on selected units. See machines for sale.
